Courtroom Specialist (Bailiff) Job at City of Phoenix – 4.2 Phoenix, AZ

The Courtroom Specialist will provide assistance to the Judges and Hearing Officers in the courtroom by performing court-related clerical work and coordinating the flow of court cases and hearings. Job duties follow established routines, but unusual cases require the application of judgment and discretion. The position reports directly to a Court Supervisor and works daily with a City Judge or Hearing Officer.

Arraignments Section & Courtroom Operations Section – Courtroom Specialists working in the Arraignments section or Courtroom Operations section interact with defendants, attorneys, witnesses, victims, jurors, and police officers, while processing judicial orders. Courtroom Specialists also prepare the docket, prepare courtrooms, ensure all essential parties and materials are present, record actions into the case management system, secure evidence, inform customers of procedures to be followed, and perform duties according to established court procedures. Work hours for both sections are Monday – Friday during normal business hours.

Jail Court Section – Courtroom Specialist working in the Jail Court section travel multiple times per day to the Maricopa County Jail and provide assistance to Judges in the jail courtroom. Courtroom Specialists interact with a high volume of in-custody defendants, attorneys, victims, police officers, and detention officers, in a jail setting while processing judicial orders. Courtroom Specialists also prepare the docket, ensure all essential materials are present, record actions into the case management system, file cases, inform customers of procedures to be followed, and perform duties according to established court procedures. Work hours for the Jail Court Section vary and will include one weekend day, some holidays, and a 4/10 schedule.

Currently, there are vacancies in the Jail Court and Courtroom Operations Sections of the Municipal Court. This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate has knowledge of Municipal Court procedures and legal and court terminology.

SALARY

$18.74 (minimum) – $23.70 (maximum) hourly / $38,979 – $49,296 annually.

Pension Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience performing court or law office-related clerical tasks.

Working irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Some positions in this classification require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess an appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license, possess personal insurance coverage, and have an acceptable driving record.

All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position. An individual receiving a conditional offer of employment from the Phoenix Municipal Court must be fingerprinted by the Phoenix Police Department and pass a background investigation through the City of Phoenix and the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to commencing employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
Experience working with MVD and/or MVD records (third party provider acceptable).

College coursework in business, public administration, criminal justice, or related field.
