General Medicine at the Canberra Hospital comprises three inpatient teams with a mix of acute and subacute patients. The case-mix includes medical illness of uncertain aetiology, patients with multiple active medical conditions, toxicology, and eating disorders requiring medical stabilisation. Managing complexity is our specialty. We understand that our patients have complex physical, psychological and social needs. We strive to provide high quality care that is evidence-based, compassionate and coordinated.

Advanced training in General Medicine at the Canberra Hospital is undertaken in a variety of roles, to meet training requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. These include terms in general medicine, Hospital-in-the Home, and subspecialty rotations. Advanced trainees may also be seconded to Calvary Hospital, Bruce for an acute medicine term.

We are accredited for 2 years of advanced training by the Specialist Advisory Committee for General Medicine.


Under limited direction of the Clinical Director you will:
Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Hospital and Health Services under the supervision and direction of Consultant Physicians in General Medicine. Clinical duties will include assessment and management of acute presentations to the Emergency Department, in-patient care (General Medicine, Hospital in the Home or other sub-specialty rotation), diagnosis and management of patients in outpatient clinics, ward consults and clinical handover.

Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff.

Assist with facilitating patient flow through the hospital by working with Access Unit personnel

Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the RACP PREP Advanced Training program, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research.

Participate in the after-hours and on-call roster.

Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care.

Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of ACT Health.

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

An Australian MBBS medical degree or equivalent.

Success in FRACP part 1 (Written and Clinical) Examinations

Current Basic Life Support skills and Advanced Life Support skills

The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.

Have an understanding of how the National Standards and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

undergo a pre-employment Occupational Medicine assessment, screening & vaccination processes.

Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
