This role is part of the Shell Renewables and Energy Solutions (RES) team with a specific focus on managing ecology and biodiversity in the RES portfolio. Key focus area will be supporting Shell’s Nature-based Solutions (NBS) business.
What’s the role?
The NBS Biodiversity Advisor position plays a lead role in driving the overall environmental culture throughout Shell RES and NBS, with a specific focus on biodiversity and nature conservation, needed for responsible and sustainable growth of the NBS business. Primary focus of this role is the implementation of Shell’s ‘Respecting Nature’ strategy across NBS, of which biodiversity is a key component.
The NBS Biodiversity Advisor will also be responsible for supporting projects with due diligence and implementation of the biodiversity requirements across the NBS portfolio, including fulfillment of the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard or its equivalent, and positioning CCB as a key driver for the NBS business. Specific focus of this role will also be on operationalizing of Shell’s Net Positive Impact (NPI) commitments in its NBS business.
Major responsibilities and accountabilities:
Lead Biodiversity expertise in NBS projects and operations
Assist NBS with further advancement and implementation of the environmental strategy and policy, with specific focus on biodiversity and ecology
Use deep-technical knowledge to identify and prioritize ecological knowledge gaps in NBS and identifies opportunities to fill gaps through collaboration with developers or Shell-only initiatives
Responsible for implementation of Shell’s Respecting Nature biodiversity commitments on deforestation and Net Positive Impact
Identify opportunities to achieve NPI in NBS projects and collaborate on methodologies and metrics to measure success of these efforts
Coordinate external and internal collaborations and partnerships on biodiversity and ecology across NBS, which involves scoping of NBS priorities, manages a number of these efforts and communicate and disseminate information and knowledge originating from these efforts
Represent the Projects Team with government environmental agencies and stakeholders, as needed
Identify and manage environmental/biodiversity contractors and quality assure deliverables
The NBS Biodiversity Advisor will manage several workstreams such as project execution support, biodiversity risk assessment and mitigation, identification and implementation of best management practices and standards setting, development of biodiversity positions for NBS, and managing or engaging in collaborative efforts and communication such as in biodiversity research. The position is responsible for managing partnerships to develop technologies and methodologies to measure, mitigate and monitor biodiversity in NBS. Furthermore, there is a responsibility for helping projects with deal delivery by developing biodiversity monitoring and mitigation plans in NBS.
This position includes partnering with relevant stakeholders to manage biodiversity and ecological issues through collaborating on environmental studies and R&D, development of best management practices and regional advocacy. There is a responsibility to provide value-added deliverables (e.g., tools, techniques, guides, training materials) in terms of content, clarity, and practicality of solutions to drive the Respecting Nature strategy.
What we need from you
The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge relevant to managing biodiversity and ecology, preferably in the NBS space.
To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to demonstrate the following required skills and experience:
Masters or PhD in Environment Science, Biology, Ecology, or relevant field
Significant working experience in managing biodiversity and ecology in projects, including experience in NBS business such as conservation management or biodiversity studies
Experience in identification, development and implementation of best management practices, environmental management processes, and policies in complex organizations
Performance driven with interest to excel in the NBS sector
Strong interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder management and liaison with different internal and external teams
Ability to communicate effectively across all operational levels of the organization and present ecological topics to project and partner staff and contractors
Project management skills as this position will be responsible for leading a range of different complex internal and external projects and partnerships
Ability to transfer knowledge to project and partner staff and contractors
The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of:
Effects of NBS activities on biodiversity, including an overview of the state of the science, mitigation measures to reduce impacts, monitoring technologies and ongoing monitoring and research efforts, including new methodologies such as eDNA to measure reforestation and other NBS activities.
Impact assessment processes and methodologies, including development of biodiversity monitoring studies to determine effectiveness of measures.
Biodiversity mitigation hierarchy as well as experience in implementation of the hierarchy largely in terrestrial, and wetland or marine, environments.
Concept of NPI on biodiversity and complexities around operationalizing NPI largely in terrestrial, and some wetland/marine environments, including identification of compensation or offsetting activities.
Existing NBS (e.g. conservation management, forestry, regenerative agriculture) regulatory regimes and frameworks.
Understanding of existing carbon credit certification schemes (e.g. VCS/CCB)
