PAYROLL TECHNICIAN Job at City of Tucson – 3.7 Tucson, AZ


The City of Tucson is seeking to fill a Payroll Technician vacancy in the Payroll section of the City’s Human Resources Department. This position will be responsible for performing various duties in support of processing payroll for active employees and monthly pensions for City retirees accurately, timely, and in compliance with all applicable agreements, statutes, codes, policies, directives, regulations, and laws. Additional responsibilities may include accounting functions and other related tasks. The successful applicant will be detail-oriented, have the ability to meet multiple deadlines timely, able to handle the stress of a fast-paced working environment, provide excellent customer service and embrace change.

Essential Functions

Performs a wide variety of record keeping and payroll processing activities including:

Computing wage and overtime payments

Auditing timekeeping records and providing oversight and assistance to front-line departments

Calculating and recording payroll deductions

Calculating and/or reviewing military and jury duty pay

Reviewing and verifying personnel action request forms that impact pay processes, terminations, and final wage payments

Administering and processing garnishments, levies, bankruptcy orders, and child support withholding orders

Calculating retroactive pay adjustments

Participating in testing payroll scenarios within the ERP system

Researches data entry discrepancies and makes changes as appropriate

Provides customer service to the City of Tucson employees, their families, and outside agencies

Journal entries for payroll deductions

Produces payroll reports, as needed.

Communicates effectively to ensure payroll records are correct and to ensure they are appropriately entered.

Performs a variety of routine office/clerical duties such as filing, coding, posting, and typing.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications: At least 2 years of experience in payroll processing and bookkeeping

Special Job Requirements

Knowledge of payroll systems and accounting database programs

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Proficiency in use of a 10 key calculator

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their application and resume. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an oral board interview.

Virtual Oral Board Interviews will be held: October 19, 2021.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant’s ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

20% of your rating for education and work experience

80% of your oral board interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List. If you qualify for preference points as outlined in the Employment Profile, you must present your documentation at the time of your interview. The DD 214 must be a copy that indicates characterization of service.
