About The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

This position supports the policy objectives of the Embassy in relation to the economic and political developments in the Netherlands. Under direction, this position manages the Economic and Public Diplomacy program within the Australian Embassy and plays a key role in promoting Australia through public outreach and social media engagement. The position also provides passport services to Australians residing in or visting The Netherlands.

Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

Monitor and report on economic and business developments in the Netherlands, including building and maintaining a network of external contacts.

Provide timely and clear policy advice and written reports relevant to Australia’s interests.

Support the Embassy’s multilateral and bilateral political work as required. This may include attending meetings and liaising with other delegations, as well as monitoring and reporting on relevant developments and national positions.

Contribute to the development of the Embassy’s economic and public diplomacy, and its media engagement strategies.

Manage the Embassy’s economic and public diplomacy engagements, including the design, planning and delivery of public diplomacy activities and events.

Manage the Embassy’s social media profile including content creation across a variety of digital platforms and identifying opportunities to drive engagement.

Support visiting officials by assisting with event planning, program development and the organisation and facilitation of official visits to the Netherlands.

Provide a range of passport services to Australian citizens in accordance with the Australian Passports Act, including client interviews, processing applications, providing advice and managing casework.

Provide administrative support to the Policy, Corporate Services team and Corporate & Consular Services Manager as required.

Required Skills/Experience

Prior experience in media and communications, including an ability to draft content and improve digital engagement would be an advantage.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders which are useful to the organisation.

Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policy and instructions in a client-focussed environment.

Strong capacity to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Excellent organisational skills, including an ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and provide accurate and timely information .

Demonstrated initiative, adaptability and the ability to work cooperatively in a small team and build productive working relationships.

Demonstrated client service and/or event management experience

A proven ability to deliver high quality client outcomes.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications and social media platforms.

Fluency in written and spoken Dutch is desirable.
