About MAG:
The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is a group of local governments working together on issues that touch the lives of every resident. We are a regional planning agency that develops solutions in areas such as transportation, air quality, economic development, and programs that meet the needs of the region.

The Position:
MAG seeks candidates for a Research Data Analyst II position to primarily support MAG and the Regional Analytics Division (RAD) as the subject matter expert on employment data, employment centers, and workforce and job industry related data. The successful candidate will be responsible for the specification, improvement, accuracy, and completeness of business and economy related data collected.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the complete update and maintenance of the MAG Business Database. This spatial data set includes individual points for all employers

with 5 or more employees at a location as well as all foreign owned employers with 1 or more employees

  • Collect and review data from several data sources. Look for innovative data solutions
  • Enhance current procedures for the update and review of the data set
  • Provide documentation and metrics for procedures, processes, and data flows of employer related data
  • Troubleshoot and QA data related issues
  • Conduct research and analysis developing reports, charts, maps, and graphs using both historical and current data. This includes analyzing and

maintaining data by different geographies

  • Interface with MAG member agencies and statewide agencies like Councils of Governments on data collection and data review activities
  • Develop and present analysis based on the data sets
  • Work with the interactive mapping team to ensure data/analytics are current and relevant
  • Support the RAD team and MAG in projects as needed

The Candidate:

  • The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:
  • Enjoy solving problems involving multiple data sets
  • Understanding of employment data and related economic data such as NAICS industry data, occupations, and employment clusters
  • Experience using Microsoft SQL Server to extract, merge, clean, and manipulate employment data.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products including Access and Excel
  • Experience with Tableau software and/or related visualization software
  • Working knowledge of Python programming language
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with members who have a wide range of skillsets and maintain constructive

working relationships

  • Attention to detail and ability to critically examine datasets and analysis
  • Outstanding organization and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player who is ready to participate in challenging projects
  • Some experience with GIS and other spatial visualization and analytical tools to perform spatial queries, create maps, and review/manage data


  • Bachelor’s Degree in data analytics, data science, research/statistics, economics, business or a related field.
  • Proficiency with relational databases and software including Microsoft SQL Server
  • 3 years of experience in related field preferred
  • Some knowledge of GIS spatial analysis tools
